Patent Name:DIFFRACTION GRATING-BASED ENCODED ARTICLES FOR MULTIPLEXED EXPERIMENTS
Country:[US] Patent ID:[CA 2545441]
Remarks: The present invention provides methods and compositions directed toward assays of a broad range of analytes using specific targeting chemicals that bind to the analytes. The assays are founded on the use of coded assay articles to which the targeting chemicals are attached. Additionally the codes are such that they are interrogated and determined in real time. The target is analyzed as to identity, presence and quantity in real time. The methods and compositions of the invention are highly suitable for use in high-complexity multiplexed assay systems. All the methods and compositions are based on assay article that includes an optical substrate to which the chemical is bound, and in which is disposed at least one diffraction grating. The grating provides an output optical signal when illuminated by an incident light signal which is indicative of the code in the substrate. In general, coded assay article or sets thereof are employed in assay methods, including multiplexed assay methods, according to which a sample is contacted with an article or a set, and any analytes that bind to the attached chemical are identified according to the code, detected and/or quantitated.

Patent Name:Container for a device for dispensing a volatile liquid
Country:[US] Patent ID:[20060186218]
Remarks: A container for a volatile liquid in a liquid dispensing device comprises a body and a neck extending from the body to define an opening. A retention structure is integral with the container body and is adapted to be releasably engaged with two opposing sidewalls of a housing of the dispensing device. The sidewalls are spaced apart in a first direction, and the retention structure is inhibits motion of the container in two opposing directions generally transverse to the first direction. The retention structure may be located on a side of the container body. A capillary member extends from inside the container to an exterior of the container. The volatile liquid migrates along the capillary member from the reservoir to the exterior of the container where it is evaporated from the surface of the capillary member by forced airflow generated by a motorized fan mounted in the housing.

Patent Name:Denitrification reactor with a fixed culture
Country:[FR] Patent ID:[20060186027]
Remarks: The present invention relates to a denitrification reactor with a fixed culture, combined with an installation for the nitrification and elimination of the carbon-based pollution.

It is known that the treatment of nitrogen in waste-water is carried out in two steps: [0003] a nitrification step during which the oxidation of the ammoniacal nitrogen, present in the effluent, to nitrite and then to nitrate is carried out by means of a biochemical reaction due to the action of autotrophic bacteria, and [0004] a denitrification step during which the nitrate nitrogen is reduced to a lower oxidation state by means of a biochemical reaction using heterotrophic bacteria.

Patent Name:Compact water purification apparatus
Country:[US] Patent ID:[20060186026]
Remarks: The present invention concerns a compact water purification apparatus for connection to a water supply having substances to be removed. This apparatus is compact and easily installed in a house or a commercial building. The apparatus according to the present invention advantageously permits the selection of different types of filter cartridges to match filtration requirements.

The present invention advantageously contemplates utilizing low-cost, commercially available standard equipment to eliminate substances such as chlorine from drinking water and from water used in food, beverage, and related uses. Furthermore, the present invention advantageously provides a bypass conduit to allow easy maintenance of the components of the present invention. The present invention also extends the life or operating hours of the water filters and the ultraviolet light source by utilizing the bypass conduit during periods when the purification process is not needed. For example, during closing hours of a business establishment, office, etc. The bypassed chlorinated water can flow until it is necessary to go back to the purified water during demand or peak use periods. This operation also keeps the bypass conduit bacteria free with the chlorinated water flow. The present invention, therefore, is a low-cost yet effective and efficient means for removing chlorine from a municipal water supply. In addition to domestic potable water use, the present invention contemplates uses in many industrial sectors where chlorine can affect the process or final product characteristics including, but not limited to, the paper, textiles, food, and beverage industries.

In addition, the present invention is scalable in that it is not limited to certain values of water flow, the amount of free residual chlorine, or the amount of TDS. Filter and piping sizes are dependent on a number of factors, including water flow and the amount of free chlorine measured in the water. The components of the present invention (the water filters and the ultraviolet light source) can be custom designed for each specific point of use water distribution system, and it also is within the scope of the present invention to mass produce the components for typical residential applications.

Patent Name:Apparatus for aspirating, irrigating and cleansing wounds
Country:[US] Patent ID:[20060155260]
Remarks: An apparatus for cleansing wounds in which irrigant fluid from a reservoir (12) connected to a conformable wound dressing (3) and wound exudate from the dressing are recirculated by a device (18) for moving fluid through a flow path which passes through the dressing and a means (17) for fluid cleansing and back to the dressing. The cleansing means (which may be a single-phase, e.g. microfiltration, system or a two-phase, e.g. dialytic system) removes materials deleterious to wound healing, and the cleansed fluid, still containing mate rials that are beneficial in promoting wound healing, is returned to the wound bed. The dressing and a method of treatment using the apparatus.

Patent Name:Method and apparatus for providing signal analysis of a bionems resonator or transducer
Country:[US] Patent ID:[20060155478]
Remarks: An outputs signal, v(t), is generated from a bioNEMs transducer and mixed with a reference signal and then filtered to generate a correlator output, r(t). The correlator output is detected to generate a signal u(t) and then determined whether the signal u(t) satisfies a predetermined threshold. If qualified, it is then decided whether the signal u(t) represents a predetermined type of interaction between a free ligand in a fluid in which the NEMS device is immersed and a receptor attached to the transducer. The threshold is the Neyman-Pearson criterion based on a predetermined probability of false detection, Pfa. The interaction may be binding of a free ligand to the receptor or releasing a bound ligand from the receptor by competitive binding with the free ligand. The step of detecting comprises detecting the envelope of the signal, r(t).
