Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion, Chinese Academy of Sciences, was founded in 1978. In 1991, it was authorized as Guangdong Energy High-New Technology Research & Development Center by Guangdong province government; thus the institute assumes a dual position with the same staff. In April 1998, former Guangdong Satellite Observation Station of Chinese Academy of Sciences was affiliated into the institute. In the same year, the institute was determined as the base institute of high technology R&D of Chinese Academy of Sciences. At present, it has a total staff of 236, comprising of 66 senior researchers and more than 90 middle-ranked. As a Master's degree of Sciences grantor authorized by the Academic Title Committee of State Council, the institute is now training Ph.D. jointly with other organizations like University Science and Technology of China, Shanghai Communication University, Taiyuan Science University and Shanxi Institute of Coal Chemistry.
---- As a state-run institute in the field of clean energy engineering science, the institute's strategic task is to R&D new and renewable energy utilization technology, to find a solution to environmental pollution and energy conservation associated with conventional energy use, and to develop energy regeneration technology for environmental pollution abatement process. The institute is not only the Chinese liaison point of Southeast Asian & Pacific "Energy Network" of UNESCO, but also honored with the of best in China in the field of solar energy research. It owns a key laboratory of the Research Development & Application of New & Renewable Energy of Guangdong Province. Besides this, it also has a network on information of new & renewable energy technology & products around China. Presently, the institute is subdivided into 8 research groups: solar energy, clean energy, biomass energy, solid wastes energy, industrial energy conservation, geothermal energy & heat pump, water & air treatment, and heat chilling. A chief scientist heads each group.
---- In order to develop high-tech enterprises and strengthen the transformation & industrialization of the research products, the institute founded Guangzhou Clean New Technology Co. Ltd and Guangdong Boluo Jiuneng High-New Technology Engineering Ltd.
GIEC consists of three parts: the research base--Huang Huagang region, the industry base-Wushan region, and the production transformation base-Boluo region.
---- Great importance is attached to international co-operation and academic exchange, thus good relationship has been established with other countries or areas, such as Japan, the United States, European Community, Egypt, Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc. Since its foundation, the institute has gained more than 100 items of research accomplishment and about 70 of them were granted prizes of provincial or ministerial level, more than 80 were granted national patents. Many of the accomplishments have been transferred into production force, yielding appreciable economic and social benefits.
---- According to the requirements of Knowledge Innovation Project, an overall reformation has been carried through by the institute, such as pinpointing study orientations, simplifying research staff, developing high-technology industry, renewing managing methods, beautifying scientific research area. Thus a relative stable and energetic group of researchers and a contingent of administrative personnel, principally consisting of young people, have been formed. The institute has become an active force in the line of China's energy research and development. |
