Research is the foundation of the development mission of the NFCRC and encompasses five principal thrust areas:Systems, Operations, Analyses, Component/Enabling Technologies, Market
Systems:
Systems research consists of studies that address substantial systems development strategies for fuel cell technologies. A principal example is the hybrid cycle formed by integrating a fuel cell--as a topping or bottoming
cycle--with a gas turbine. Analyses project that the efficiency gains in such cycles can reach in excess of 70%. A Systems study analyzes, develops, and demonstrates such a system.
Operations:
Operations research addresses the operation of fuel cells and fuel cell systems, including the balance of plant, reliability, maintainability, grid connectivity, and operability. Such research is essential to understanding, projecting, evaluating, and enhancing performance in the marketplace.
Analyses:
This research encompasses the wide variety of analyses required to understand and upon the fundamental operation of fuel cell systems, and to project the corresponding impacts of fuel cell technologies in the marketplace. Included are systems analyses, cycle analyses, cost-benefit analyses, and market analyses.
Component/Enabling Technologies:
Component research includes sub systems of fuel cell technologies that require direct attention for the overall improvement of performance. Examples include fuel processors, materials, controls, inverters, and power electronics.
This research is the most akin to traditional university engineering research and is inspired by the beta testing activity. Component research is a critical asset to the siting of the NFCRC at UCI, in that fundamental research capabilities of the university may be drawn upon to enhance the basic science and engineering of fuel cell technology, and allow for its broader marketability by overcoming existing barriers of cost, size, and materials constraints.
The enabling technologies research is component research, which is on a critical time line, or is critical to the successful implementation of general or specific fuel cell technology. Examples could include reformer technology for a specific application, or inverter technology. Without the successful and rapid development of enabling technology research, the application and marketing of the fuel cell technology as a whole could be compromised.
Market:
Market research provides the foundation for directing the load range, the applications, and the operating characteristics of the fuel cell technologies. Historically, market research and business planning has not been integral to technology development. The NFCRC integrates this component, complementing it with leadership from the Outreach Advisory Committee to assure that the technologies developed domestic and international markets. |
