Since the early 1980's, he has been mainly engaged in the scintillation crystals research. After recognizing the radiation damage in the bismuth germanate (BGO) crystal, being the result of forming radiation-induced color center due to oxygen vacancies in the crystal, he successfully developed a new type of Eu-doped BGO scintillation crystal with high radiation hardness. A scintillation crystal research group led by him provided more than 10,000 pieces of large size BGO crystal for the construction of the electromagnetic calorimeter in the European Nuclear Research Center (CERN). In recent years, he has been working on the halide scintillation crystals. such as BaF2 , Caf3, PbF2, Csl(TI), etc., and fruitful progress has been attained. |

Research Domain:modeling and simulation of flow processes, transport phenomena and flow-induced phase transitions in systems with a complex internal microstructure. |
Country:[CN] |
Research Production: |
" Our research is concerned with the modeling and simulation of flow processes, transport phenomena and flow-induced phase transitions in systems with a complex internal microstructure. Typical examples include the flow of polymer solutions and melts, turbulent flow, free-surface flows with surfactants, etc. Our primary concern is the interrelationship between the flow and the microstructure. Our approach in dealing with complex dynamic phenomena involving multiple scales in length and time is hierarchical. Our theoretical analysis starts from non-equilibrium thermodynamics considerations of the microstructure. Based on our recently developed modeling approach (see research monograph in the references below), a thermodynamically consistent macroscopic continuum description is achieved. For that, microscopic information is used, which is obtained from models in the literature or generated, as needed. Last, but not least, specific predictions on flow processes of interest are obtained through the use of analytical (i.e., stability analysis and bifurcation theory) and numerical methods (high performance computing simulations). Thus, considerable effort is devoted to the development of suitable numerical methods and their efficient implementation in state-of-the-art computer architectures (vector and parallel supercomputers). Lykos has some 70 publications in journals ranging from the Journal of Chemical Physics to the Journal of Chemical Education and including six books he edited on aspects of computers and chemistry, two of which were published by John Wiley and four by the Books Division of the American Chemical Society.
At the invitation of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) based in Paris, France, Lykos created a 155-page report, The Computer's Role in Undergraduate Chemistry Curricula, that UNESCO sent to 300 universities and other scientific organizations in developing countries. In response to individual requests, another 500 copies went to developed countries. |

Research Domain:Synthesis and characterization of novel lanthanide fluorescence probes. |
Country:[CN] |
Research Production: |
Lanthanide chelates have been successfully developed as fluorescence probes and widely used for highly sensitive time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay (TR-FIA), DNA hybridization assay, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), TRF bioimaging microscopy. The advantage of the microsecond TRF measurement using lanthanide fluorescence probe is its high sensitivity. The method permits easy distinction of specific fluorescence signal of the long-lived label from short-lived background signal present in most biological samples, and also obviates the problems associated with scattering light of the optical components, whereas these problems cannot be solved easily by the general fluorescence methods. |

Research Domain:the fundamental interactions between molecules, both in isolation and in the complex environment of the cell. |
Country:[CN] |
Research Production: |
" The Robinson laboratory is interested in understanding the fundamental interactions between molecules, both in isolation and in the complex environment of the cell. We use our growing understanding to design proteins with more robust or novel properties and to engineer cellular systems for improved production or drug screening applications. To this end, we are investigating the determinants of protein folding and misfolding, on both an atomic and molecular level. We have developed several novel approaches to inhibiting protein misfolding and aggregation. Additionally, we are designing cellular systems for optimal expression of membrane proteins, and antibodies. Our approach uses techniques in molecular biology, genetic engineering, and biophysical chemistry to identify and study macromolecules at both an atomic and cellular level. Mechanistic modeling guides us in experimental design and analysis. We use both prokaryotic, or bacterial, systems as well as eukaryotic systems, such as yeast or mammalian cells. A major goal of this research is to establish a set of cellular systems that could express any protein of interest. The research in the laboratory has focus areas in protein stability, expression, and aggregation for biotechnology and biomedical applications. " |

Research Domain:chemical pharmaceutical industries |
Country:[CN] |
Research Production: |
" The major expense in the chemical pharmaceutical industries is the separations and purifications processes that are largely designed on the basis of phase equilibrium. Thermophysical properties and phase equilibria also play important roles in biochemical processing, environmental engineering and risk and safety analysis. Our research program encompasses each of these areas and includes basic theory, experimental measurements, and supercomputer simulation. " |
